Instructional Strategies: Active Learning
I recently tasked my students with creating a set of process documents for a number of jobs within our organisation. The intention was for me to purely facilitate. Quickly I found that all ideas were being run past me for ‘approval’ and often, they ran out of ideas or lost focus. On two occasions, I posed a question and then left the room. On my return the students were actively brainstorming. An ‘aha’ moment with this group of learners but as this article discusses “there were fewer attention lapses” during active learning. Here, freedom and variation helped the learning process.
